Bar' Blues, "From Four 'till late

Below are som pictures from a really amazing afternoon and evening at Bar' Blues in Copenhagen. I know I'm too young to re-live my youth (I am - well, sometimes anyway :-P ), but this evening was like a trip back to my teens and early twenties with some people who have meant a lot to me over the years.

Bar' Blues is a really nice place near the center of Copenhagen, dedicated to Blues and what looked like really tasty Cajun food. This concert was part of the Copenhagen Blues Festival 2002. As the headline above indicates, the fun started at four and ended at midnight (According to the program anyway, but with these guys, you never know). At first each person did an appr. 45 min. solo-act, and after that it was time for the Jam-Session where anything could happen, and probably did :-)

Kenn Lending
I saw Kenn Lending with Champion Jack Dupree at the Tønder Festival in 1986 or 1987, which was pretty amazing, almost like watching son and father on stage, with a lot of humor and great music. Sadly, Jack Dupree is not around anymore, but Kenn Lending definitely is, both solo and with his band.

Troels Jensen
Well, I spend quite a bit of my time in the last years of school and through high school listening to the two big D's then, Dire Straits and Delta Cross/Blues Band, and while they seem to be more off than on, thankfully Troels Jensen has always been around, either with Delta Cross/Blues Band, Katzenjammer Kids/Jørgen Lang, lately with HP Lange or all by himself with a piano and a guitar.

Børge "Biceps" Jensen
Appart, probably, from my father working "undercover" with his guitar, piano and a diet of jazz and blues, Børge "Biceps", then of Big Mama, and Peter Viskinde of Big Fat Snake are to blame (Thanks !!) for my discovery of blues. They played at a Jam-session in Musikcafeen in the early eighties (1981-83), and our local youth club "Gutternes Badekar" ("The Guys Bathtub" !!), full of class, ideas and always making life great fun for us kids, arranged a trip to this probably small event, that changed my idea of music forever and probably left me with a very open mouth during the concert. Børge "Biceps" singing "Have you ever loved a woman" stuck in my head for years, and I still have a picture in my head of him, with his head slightly angled to the left (Right for me), almost crying into the microphone. Beautiful !!

Hans Knudsen
My father has had Hans Knudsens CD's on top of his "hit-list" for a few years, and having finally got to see him live, I can't blame him. It's amazing what you can do on a piano. A dream come true would be to see Troels Jensen and Hans Knudsen playing a piano duet. That would be magical !! (If they did at the Jam-session after I left, I really don't want to know !!).

Nisse Thorbjørn
Nisse Thorbjørn was new to me, and therefore somehow the highlight of the day, as I had no idea what to expect at all. He's very young, at least compared to the other four, but he's definately not "just a dream" - He's real !! - And what a powerfull voice !!

Due to a tour with Natteravnene I had to leave before the real fun, i.e. the Jam-session, started, but this day will live in my memory for a very long time.

I don't know if the other musicians have web-sites, but if they do, I will add them ASAP. A CD, recorded live at Bar' Blues in September 2002, has been released with 14 of the people who have played there, incl. all the above. Not much to say, except it's amazing how much gold you can put onto a tiny piece of plastic. Buy it - NOW !! - It will be a classic and collectors item.
