Østkyst (East Coast) Rock 1999

Østkyst Rock is a competition for young bands from the Youth Schools and Music Schools of Roskilde County. 15 bands (One band had to cancel) took part, and they had about 10 minutes to put up their gear, and 20 minutes to play each.

The first band started at 13.30 and the last show ended at about 21.30.

When you took the various band members age into consideration, the quality was indeed very high and varied. For some reason there was no Rap music, but otherwise the music varied from punk to pop-music and old soul classics. Two bands really hit a soft spot in me, when they played "Sweet home Alabama" and Pink Floyds "Time", respectively. A very special thanks to Chazenel and KKM-All Stars for making me feel less ancient !!!!

The competition was fierce, and a lot of them took it VERY seriously. The reactions after the various shows varied from beaming smiles, to tears and words I can't write here ......:-)

The results were ready at about 22.00, and a lot of very nervous band members waited eagerly in front of the stage. The speaker tried to tease them by dragging the time, with the desired result :-). One band-member was so nervous, that he was about to burst, and threatened to stick a lit sparkler up in the speakers ..... well, you know what !! Others walked around looking like zombies from being both tired and excited. As was proved during the Footstock Festival, real human beings on stage.

Quite deservedly Valuta turned out to be the winners. They received a gift voucher worth DKK 2000 (US$ ~285) and four hours in a studio.

Number two, Spånk, received a gift voucher worth DKK 1500 (US$ ~214) and four hours in a studio.

Number three was Moonstone (YES !!). They received a gift voucher worth DKK 1000 (US$ ~142).

Further, there was a guitar for the "best guitar man", Jon (?) from Spånk.

Good luck in the future to all the involved bands, and thanks for a great day/evening.

Have a look at Footstock and Moonstone as well.
